Description We’re organizing nationwide “Cost of Delay” vigils on Tuesday, December 8th. The vigils will shine a spotlight on the number of Americans in our communities who can’t afford to pay their medical bills and are being forced into bankruptcy. We’ll show the Senate that we can’t afford to wait for change — and the pressure is on them to pass health care reform with a robust national public option THIS YEAR. These vigils will be one of the biggest events we’ve organized all year, and we plan to involve as many people as possible. We’ll ask MoveOn members all over the country to step up and host a vigil, so we’ll have hundreds of vigils all around the country.

My 5th Cancer Patient

I forgot about this guy in my cancer tally from yesterday. This may be the most interesting because of the ethical dilemma involved. A guy with schizophrenia who came in with massive vomiting of blood requiring 13 units of blood. He received emergent interventional radiology embolization of the artery supplying his stomach. He has stomach cancer. It was diagnosed 2 years ago and he refused surgery. We are recommending surgery again. One to treat the cancer. Two to prevent the stomach from bursting again and him bleeding to death. He doesn’t want the surgery. But on psychiatric evaluation he doesn’t have the capacity to refuse the surgery. The psychiatrists came and spoke to him and he clearly doesn’t believe he has cancer and doesn’t understand the risk he is undertaking by refusing the surgery. He does not have any relatives, proxies, or guardians to make the decision for him. So what do we do now. I called the Risk Management department in the hospital and they put me in touch with a lawyer. The lawyer is going to submit the case to a judge who is going to have a hearing and decide what to do. Although, the patient doesn’t understand he will die if he refuses I still believe he shouldn’t get the surgery. Imagine being forced to go to sleep against your own will and waking up without a stomach and having to eat through a tube the rest of your life.
